Leather never wears out it only wears in!
It’s time to upweight your leather knowledge and most importantly your sampling.
For the next few weeks will provide a short educational burst on leather and all its nuances, the stunning Decor Design leather ranges, and answer any critical questions you may have about leather and all its mysteries.
Decor Design Leather is a meticulously crafted leather range manufactured in Northern Italy, the home of upholstery leather, and stocked locally in Perth, WA. It has been used extensively across the Australian and New Zealand commercial landscape from the Qantas lounges, Crown and Star Casinos, Merivale, Solotel hospitality groups, Westfield shopping centres, and across many top-end furniture manufacturers and retailers.

All our leather samples are now in the new ‘D’ format.

Why do we all love leather so much?
It has been a part of our human existence since the dawn of time. Man first used animal skins to satisfy his basic needs, and since then we have worn it, sailed in it, sat on it, and even fought in it for centuries as leather evolved to become a symbol of prestige and beauty. It is unmistakably comfortable and has an inherent ability to breathe, mold, and shape itself over time, creating an individual signature on each leather expression.
How was it made?
In primitive societies, the art was a closely guarded secret passed down from father to son. Methods of preserving and softening leather, treating animal skins with smoke, grease and bark extracts can be traced to 8000 BCE. The process is also mentioned in several ancient texts, including the Bible, the Assyrian texts and Homer’s Iliad:
“The ox hide, which is soaked in fat, is pulled to and fro by men standing in a circle, thus stretching the skin and causing the fat to penetrate into the pores.”
Fast-forward 3000 years, and we see the dawn of vegetable tanning in what is now the Middle East: paintings and artifacts recovered from Egyptian tombs indicate bark from the gum arabic tree (Acacia nilotica), sesame oil and alum were used to process leather (a process also apparently known to the Romans).
This eventually evolved into the modern Chromium tanning best produced in Northern Italy for upholstery leathers. We will cover the modern methods in our next feature.

Range highlight:
Antico is a waxed ‘pull up’ leather
Antico evokes a sense of history, a sense of nostalgia and prestige. This spectacular leather has a luxurious and supple feel, which continues to enhance and soften with age. The antique effect of the waxed finish is a mark of sophistication and character that sits perfectly in both contemporary and traditional interiors.
Antico is classed as a ‘pull up’ leather because the waxes and oils in the hide respond differently when you apply pressure to it, lightening the colour.
