Welcome to this instalment
in our Leather feature

The Inner workings of leather specification

It’s time to upweight your leather knowledge and most importantly your sampling.

Decor Design Leather is a meticulously crafted leather range manufactured in Northern Italy, the home of upholstery leather and stocked locally in Perth, WA. It has been used extensively across the Australian and New Zealand commercial landscape from the Qantas lounges, Crown and Star Casinos, Merivale, Solotel hospitality groups, Westfield shopping centres across many top end furniture manufacturers and retailers.

How to specify or select leather?

Now that you have an understanding of the different types of leather the key question is how to specify it? And the answer is: It depends! Like most products there are specification ins and outs but leather takes these to another level.

It is critical to understand and match the clients expectations for their furniture with the product specified.

All Decor Design leathers are fit for purpose ie; suitable for commercial and residential use but typically there are two types of leather clients:

Serviceable, consistent
Clients who want a stable leather, that looks the same, never changes, is consistent are more likely to prefer a pigmented or corrected grain product. These have been engineered for stability.

Natural, evolving
Clients who love natural leather that evolves over time, wears in. These clients are more suited to the aniline, semi-aniline leathers.

If you have engaged the client to understand their leather needs for look, feel, consistency, ageing etc… then the leather that best matches their expectations is the right choice. An informed client with the right expectations will love their leather for many years to come.

There are many other nuances when it comes to specifying leather but this sits at the heart of it.

Remember if you have any questions at all we are here to make your next leather specification a success.

Range highlight: Brusio

Brusio is the designers favourite!

Brusio is one of our evolving semi-aniline leathers, produced on the finest European raw material. It is designed to develop a beautiful patina over time which will enhance with use, often characterised by darkening of body contact areas, all combined with excellent protection and wearing properties. Each hide exhibits unique character and texture.

The distinctive matte appearance and handle of Brusio is created by lightly brushing each hide with beeswax hence the Brusio name (English translation ‘buzz’).

The beeswax treatment accentuates the supple, matte-wax texture in the hide and results in a superb soft, distinctly velvet-like handle. The colour range embodies subtle, natural hues with distinctive shadowy undertones.
