Light control: fabric, film or solar tint

Daylight is four problems, not one. How much light comes in, how much glare comes with it, how much heat, and how much can be seen through the glass from outside. A material that solves one of them will often make another worse.

Fabric solves them by construction. Weave density and weight decide how much light passes, and the same weave decides what can be seen through it. The range runs from blockout, through dim-out and light reduction, to a sheer that holds the view.

Film solves them at the surface of the glass. Frosted, etched and printed films manage what can be seen through a partition or a door without changing the daylight behind it.

Solar tint solves them in the coating. An interlayer or a surface treatment cuts heat and glare while the glass stays clear, which is the one answer that does not cost you the view.

Which is right depends on which of the four problems the room actually has, and on whether the answer has to work after dark as well as during the day.
